Annie Leibovitz
October 2, 1949-now
Annie Leibovitz and her five siblings were born in Waterbury, Connecticut. Her parents were Samuel and Marilyn Edith. In 1967 she was living in the Philippines, and enrolled in the San Francisco Art Institute wanting to become a painter, she had always dabbled in different types of art ever since she was young. She took a night class on photography for fun and she was immediately enthralled. Three years later still at school, she got her first commercial assignment for The Rolling Stone magazine. Her job was to photograph John Lennon, this was when her photography career blossomed.
She is famous for her portraits of celebrities, her pictures are very bold and dramatic. They often evoke emotion from the viewer. She is good at showing a behind the scenes vibe from people. She mainly photographs famous people, and has done many shoots with a variety of musicians, actors, and singers. She’s very good at taking unique photos of people from angles and ways you wouldn’t expect. Leibovitz is also good at capturing her subject's character, and how they are as a person.
Annie Leibovitz focuses on showing how society precepts people, especially women, expecting them to be what society declares to be "perfect", and if they're not they're considered somehow less-than. Her picture of Meryl Streep shows her with mime-like makeup on her face, and she is pulling her face from different angles. This picture shows the struggle she goes through, and the struggle other women go through to be perfect, and how that tears you apart. The photo isn't considered the most flattering because of what it's showing, and the lighting, and background are both quite plain, so the focus of the picture is just on Meryl Streep's face and the makeup. I think this picture has both personal and social ideas behind it.
I have been influenced by Annie Leibovitz’s passion in photography, and how independent of a woman she is. After seeing many of her portraits, I have transformed my pictures into more independent works of art like hers. Annie Leibovitz has written about some of her portraits and the meanings they have, I’ve found that the these writings have been very interesting, and informative. Annie Leibovitz has not only taught me about photography, but also about how to be a successful woman today. I aspire to be able to capture everything that Annie has captured through her photography.
The first picture I took was one of my friend Hallie, that picture resembles the one of Jennifer Lawrence. I had Hallie tie her hair back, so it was out of her face just like the original portrait, and I had her wear a black shirt so that would match. In the picture of Jennifer Lawrence the color green is accented from her eyes, and the background, in my picture I chose to accent the color blue. Next, I took the picture of Laura, my step-mom. Her photo corresponds to the one of Natalie Portman, I edited the picture so it would look very dark, and I had Laura look very serious, just like Natalie was in her photo. There wasn't very many followers that I could find for the background, so in my picture there's more of an assortment of plants. The last picture I took was one of my friend Mia, the photo I took of her coincides with the one of Meryl Streep. I had Mia pull her face from different angles, like Meryl is doing in her photo, and photoshopped on the mask. I didn't have a fan so her hair isn't flowing backwards, like it is in the original photo.
My favorite picture I took was probably the one of Laura, I like the colors that are in the image, and even though it's not very similar to Leibovitz's photo I still like it. I struggled taking the majority of these pictures. It was hard to find a way to recreate what Leibovitz had done. The hardest picture I had to do was the one of Mia. In the original image, Meryl Streep has a a mask over her face, and with my picture I recreated that with photoshop. It was difficult to photoshop the image to be like the mask in the original image, and I'm not very happy with the final product.
